Championship Promotion Race Could Go Down the Wire

The EFL Championship in England is widely regarded as one of the most competitive leagues in the world, and this season is proving no different. The race for the two automatic promotion spots could go right down to the final round of fixtures.

Once the regular season is over; four teams will then compete in the playoffs for the final spot on offer in the 2024/25 Premier League campaign. The Championship playoff final is the richest game in world football, as it is worth over $100 million to the winner.

Leicester in with Great Chance of Immediate Return

Former Premier League winners Leicester City were relegated from the Premier League last season, but they are in great shape to make an immediate return. The Foxes have led the standings for most of the campaign so far. They have

Championship betting odds

of -225 to win the title this season.

Leicester

appointed Enzo Maresca

as their head coach last summer. The Italian had previously worked as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City. He has won 31 of his opening 45 matches as the Foxes boss, so he has made an excellent start to his career at the King Power Stadium.

As well as going strong in the Championship, Leicester has also reached the quarterfinals of the FA Cup. They have a tough last-eight tie with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge to look forward to. The winner of that contest will head to Wembley for the semi-finals.

Leicester have been very clinical in front of goal this season. No team has scored more goals in the Championship than the Foxes after 37 games. They have been helped by former England international Jamie Vardy, who is on course for over 20 goals.

Leeds Having Excellent Campaign

When they fell out of the Premier League in 2004, Leeds United spent 16 consecutive seasons outside of the top flight of English football. The Yorkshire club were relegated from the Premier League again back in May, but they may not have to wait long for their return.

Leeds is second in the table following 37 games and sits just three points behind Leicester. They have yet to suffer defeat in 2024 in the Championship, a run that has helped them climb the table after a moderate opening half to the season.

Manager Daniel Farke took over the reins at Elland Road back in July. He knows all about Championship success, as he

won this league

with Norwich City in 2019 and 2021.

Ipswich the Surprise Package

Suffolk-based club Ipswich Town were promoted from League One (third tier in England) last season, and they could be on course for a second consecutive promotion. The Tractor Boys have won six of their last seven matches in the Championship to keep the heat on Leicester and Leeds.

Ipswich has not been in the Premier League since 2002. Their manager Kieran McKenna is one of the youngest head coaches in England at the age of 37. His reputation is improving all the time, and it will rise further should get his side promoted this season.

The final round of fixtures in the Championship season comes on May 4.
